Join Us At The Content Management Connection! Or,Here's Your Chance To Finally Blog.

contentmanagementconnection  If you hadn't heard, we recently launched the Content Management Connection (CMC). It's, in our own words..

"..an online community for technology practitioners, software companies, and end users to share thoughts and ideas on the changing landscape of content management and collaboration."

Some of you will recognize the layout from your involvement in Social Media Today. It's built on the same platform, WordFrame, which if nothing else, is a damn good blog engine and aggregator.

And for the record, we're doing this kind of stuff because we're passionate about bringing people together and creating value from those interactions.

So jump in if you'd like, we'd love to hear what you have to say.

CMS Haters To Gather in NYC

internetstrategyforum OK, the headline's a little strong, but it did grab your attention.

While I was scanning Twitterville, I noticed CMSWire was microblogging about the upcoming "I Hate My CMS" event in New York City. I'm fairly confident (like you) I could personally sign up a few hundred folks for this one.

The promoters actually nailed it:

"While CMSes are among the most vital systems in digital businesses, they are also among the most cursed due to their limitations and idiosyncrasies."

Most of us know how important content management systems are to serving our markets, but unfortunately there's just as many of us that would rejoice if we never had to touch a CMS toolset again.

According to organizers, the panel will address CMS issues from customer and vendor viewpoints in addition to commentary from a technology analyst. The "tales from the trenches" part should alone be worth the price of admission.

Panelists include:

* Kyle McNabb, Principal Analyst, Forrester Research
* Tim Peters, Managing Director, Leading Hotels of the World/LHW.com
* Albert Lee, Director of Technology, New York Magazine

The Society for Information Management (SIM)and the Internet Strategy Forum are hosting the event.

I'm Blogging at Information Week

IWeek Content Management Blog Just in case you think The ECM Blog has become just a glorified link site, I wanted to let you know I've also started blogging for Information Week. So if you're inclined, I'd love to welcome you over there for content management (and information management) news and commentary.

Now, if you're a vendor, make your PR pros earn their money by sending along story ideas and vendor news. If you're a client and want to get some pub on your company and your team, you can also drop me a line.

Here's some of my latest posts..and as always, thanks for reading.

TypePad Issues | Pardon Our Mess

the_ecm_blog It's a bit frustrating when your most recent post on your techie blog concerns your failed attempts at troubleshooting your own blog. Bear with me as I try to get the user interface and layout back into shape. I'm really tempted to move everything to Wordpress and I just might if I don't get this stuff straightened out quickly.

Blogging the AIIM Show in Boston

I just landed in Boston for the AIIM Show this week. This year's a little different as I'm attending as a participant. The folks at Xerox invited me to be a part of their ECM | e-Discovery roundtable.

The panel includes some real heavy hitters in the legal,high-tech, media, and analyst communities. Should make for some good discussion.

Xerox also tells me they'll be recording the session and plan to push it out as a podcast. If you're wondering what the "Show Me" scanned image is,that's my ticket to Xerox's event at Fenway Park. They've got a tour planned and we'll even get to meet some of the players! What's a trip to Beantown without heading out to Fenway. I think I'll stay out of the batting cages though. ;)

I'm planning to blog the conference mostly on Twitter, so if you want the down and dirty subscribe to my Twitter feed here. For those unfamiliar with Twitter, think of it as an SMS-based mini blog. You can see their widget running on my blog..it's the one that says, "What Am I Doing?" A lot of people use it to chronicle EVERYTHING they're doing but I tend to use it as a more of a business channel..what I'm reading, analyzing, commenting on, etc.

A far the show goes, there's always plenty to talk about during the week - new products, new alliances, research, you name it. So if you've got some stuff you'd like to pitch, drop me an email and let's schedule a few  minutes to chat while I'm in Boston.

And those distinguished panelists I mentioned earlier?

Wanna Be a Part of The Enterprise Content Management (ECM) Network?

I saw the powerful effects of activating a network recently in a matter of days.I guess we bloggers are a shameless bunch of self promoters. Give us a network badge or two, some portable JavaScript and we're in!

Case in point. I asked some reputable software and technology bloggers a short time ago to join the Enterprise Content Management Network, a FeedBurner-hosted network that aggregates members' blogs and splits the ad revenue. You regular readers will know most of the names, but recent additions you might not know include C3 Associates and the Tower Software guys.

Now none of us are getting rich anytime soon sharing ad revenues, but hopefully we'll give some fledgling bloggers a chance to be heard and learn some stuff about each other along the way. Maybe at some point we can have something like Social Media Today.(sigh)

On a side note, I noticed the network has a little Google juice as it's starting to appear organically. (roughly #25)

And if you haven't done so yet, grab this OPML file and you'll have a single RSS feed for some great insight and commentary. Thanks to everyone who joined thus far..you're a talented group.

P.S. Send me a note if you want to join. You'll look darn good with your blog featured in our widget ;)

Geez, Do I Have To Do This? I've Been Tagged.

For fear of having the wrath of bad blog karma come down on me, I'll perpetuate the blog tag game. If you didn't know, the blogosphere's version of the chain letter has taken hold in the form of calling out (tagging) other bloggers to divulge 5 things about themselves. I think its genealogy can be traced to here. I apologize in advance for the intrusion as I enter your feedreader.

Thanks Russ ;)

1. My wife and I appeared on the front page of the Dallas Morning News on Christmas Eve 2001. That's me with the bright yellow shirt on. Clearly it was my wife who garnered the photographer's attention.

2.
My first internet job was for USWeb Corporation back in 1996. I answered a classified ad in the newspaper looking for an internet salesperson. For those of you that don't remember USWeb, they were one of the first internet professional services firms (whatever that meant) and they used the franchise model to grow their "affiliate offices". Sort of the McDonald's of the web at that time. It still amazes how the web has been transformed in just over a decade. Back then I was pitching $10-20K websites and intranets with functionality less than today's build-on-the-fly widgets.

3. We had our first son almost a year ago to this post (1|19|2006) -- Nate Dearing. What can I say, best thing that's ever happened to me.

4. My wife and I have an obsession with vintage stuff. We started collecting junk antiques after we got married and quickly filled up our house and garage. Luckily, we've honed our tasted to focus on mostly items from the art deco and midcentury eras. Midcentury stuff is my real weakness.

5.   I'm a native Texan and grew up in Houston before moving to Big "D".

Go Coogs!

And now for my blog tag victims candidates. I'm calling out Jennifer Dearing (ha!), Richard Carey, Jason Hirst, Shannon Whitley, Rick Grant, and Bret Starr. Get on it folks!

Hear Google's Pitch at ECM West

I noticed the folks at ECM  West have added Google's Seminar In a Box to an already impressive list of breakouts. It'll be interesting to see how Google pitches in an ECM context. There's no question they've helped bring search to the enterprise forefront, but what about the other pieces?

One thing I'm sure we'll hear about is the roadmap for the Apps For Your Domain product. It has a decidedly ECM slant, just by having Google's Page Creator (pictured below). And with web content management (WCM) en vogue again, what's to stop Google from integrating their WCM back-end with other ECM toolsets?

And having used it to create a website in about 30 minutes, (I know, it shows) I can tell you it's compelling enough to consider for many a web project. Plug in a CSS resource, add some intranet widgets and you could be on your way.

What would you want to hear from Google?

EMC's Forum Series Hits Dallas

I'll be attending the EMC forum series in Dallas tomorrow, hoping to get further insight on EMC's strategy. Interestingly, I noticed one of the breakout sessions was dedicated to "Optimizing Your Microsoft Technology Investment." Back in March, MSFT and EMC expanded their alliance, but I'm really interested in the Documentum/MSFT stuff. I'll post some details over the next few days. See you there.

Moving On

I'll be catching up on the blogging front over the next few weeks, but the angle and objectivity will shift a bit. Why you ask? As of this past Tuesday, I'm no longer with Imagine Solutions. It was the right time to move on and I'm very excited about what I'm focused on now..we're sort of in stealth mode, but details are soon to follow. You'll notice I de-Imaginized most of the content on some of the blogs I maintain. That's what I meant by shifting the focus. In the past, each of the sites were a little too billboardy. Going forward, I intend to continue aggregating and commenting on the ECM marketplace, but you'll find more information on vendors other than FileNet and Imagine. In fact, over the next few weeks, our team will be working on bringing together the ECM, Distributed Capture, and FileNet Blogs to form a more cohesive ECM portal of sorts.

And thanks to everyone who subscribes -- your comments, feedback, and suggestions are always welcomed. Onward and forward!!!!!!!!!!!!

Welcome to the Enterprise Content Management (ECM) Blog

So what is ECM you ask? We thought a good way to kick things off was to provide you with some of the pieces of the ""ECM Puzzle" ", aptly named by the ECM experts at AIIM. So that's what you're faced with as you define your ECM Strategy. And that's a big reason why we launched this blog. We want to be one of the sources you look to for information on things like enterprise content management (ECM), business process management (BPM) and other best practices and approaches related to information management.

Me, I'll be your host and messenger of information.
